A Close Brush With Kinkade
For the first time in many years the festive season will feature only one film about Christmas, but it is aimed squarely at traditionalists. In the US, this sentimental family film was titled Thomas Kinkade’s Home for Christmas to alert audiences to its essential subject.
Kinkade is one of the most loved and commercially successful artists in the US. The art world scoffs at his work, calling it kitsch, but to millions he is known as “The Painter of Light”, and his romanticised visions of traditional American life and landmarks have made him famous.
He has been called “America’s most collected living artist” and his business, The Thomas Kinkade Company, has sold printed reproductions of his work worth R18,6-billion over the past 15 years
Kinkade’s work is intensely patriotic. He depicts landmark moments in the history of various American institutions. His paintings have commemorated Disneyland’s 50th anniversary; Elvis Presley’s Graceland as it was 50 years ago; and the Yankee stadium’s farewell 85th season in 2008 when “America’s most beloved ballpark” closed forever.

He said of the film: “It has been a life- long dream to tell some of the story of my own life through the medium of motion pictures. My parents parted ways early, and my proud mother — who never accepted public aid — struggled mightily to keep her three children fed and housed, despite almost daily challenges.”
Oscar-winning stars like Marcia Gay Harden and Peter O’Toole play key roles in the film, with Polish newcomer Jared Padalecki playing the young Kinkade.
Director Michael Campus, a well-known maker of faith-based films , has shaped this movie as an affectionate ode to a famous US personality.
